This collection of lush and lovely orchestrations is a long-awaited sequel to Nelson Riddle's wonderful "Sea Of Dreams" album. Like its predecessor it contains a dozen inventive arrangements penned by the remarkably talented Mr. Riddle, who draws much of his inspiration from the tranquil beauty of the sea he loves so well. His Southern California home overlooks the blue Pacific Ocean, and it is here that he finds an atmosphere most conducive to creating writing.
Several of the arrangements in this album can actually be classified as musical seascapes, including Nelson's original title tune Love Tide, and the familiar standard Ill Wind, both of which are impressionistically painted in brilliant water-colors by Riddle's imaginative orchestrating.
Utilizing a full complement of strings spiced by the tasteful use of harp, celeste, vibes, guitar, and rhythm, Riddle infuses such favorites as East Of The Sun and Solitude with a new richness, weaving melody and counter-melody in seemingly endless patterns of sound. In several selections a bolero-like beat adds a haunting Latin touch, while on Caravan Riddle uses exciting rhythms and strange instrumental effects to create a choice bit of exotica. Santana is another Riddle original, and here the composer's arrangement brings to mind the romantic splendor of Spain's Mediterranean shores.
The album, which is filled with orchestral magnificence from beginning to end, promises to further enhance the reputation of Nelson Riddle as one of the most creative and accomplished music-masters in America today.
