To Ray Conniff, HAPPINESS obviously IS... recording albums that bring you HAPPY music for HAPPY listening and dancing...

And to millions of fans - youngsters, oldsters, the wed and the unwed, at home and abroad - HAPPINESS IS an album in which the HAPPY sound, the HAPPY feeling mean Ray Conniff, His Singers, His Orchestra.

(From the original liner notes)

An aggressively "happy" album by Ray Conniff and his singers, Happiness Is combines exuberant singalongs, wordless vocals, and instrumentals in a grab-bag album that covers many -- if not most -- of Conniff's bases. A couple of mellow moments don't detract from the overarching sunniness of the album, which lapses into delicious self-parody with "Popsy" and the hilarious title track (co-written by former teen idol Paul Evans). "The Sheik of Araby" is whistled to a shuffling soft-shoe rhythm, and the joyous ba-ba's totally eclipse the inherent loneliness of "Blue Moon." Happiness Is is a fun and very funny album that once again shows Conniff's self-effacing sense of humor.

Subways Are For Sleeping

Ever feel that the daily grind of making a living was interfering with living itself? Tired of big business deals, mass culture, bomb shelters? Then come for an exciting subway ride with composer Jule Styne and arranger-conductor Percy Faith. Percy is an expert guide through Jule Styne's irresistible score for the new Broadway musical hit, "Subways Are For Sleeping", all about Manhattan's zany "undergroud" population. Book and lyrics are by the famed team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

Percy Faith's arrangement of the opening number begins, appropriately, with drums representing the distant rumble of a subway train, then swells to a roaring orchestral crescendo as we Ride Through The Night to meet some of New York's most relaxed and picturesque odd-balls. The easy-going strains of I'm Just Taking My Time puts us in a receptive mood to meet these carefree denizens of subways, Grand Central Station benches and even deserted galleries in the hallowed Metropolitan Museum Of Art! We discover with them how amicable the world really can be as we listen to the cheerful, lilting When You Help A Friend Out.

Who Knows What Might Have Been? introduces us to the show's hero Tom Bailey, ex-business tycoon turned odd-jobber (walking people's dogs is a specialty). A chance encounter in the subway introduces him to a runaway bride, Angie McKay. The driving tempo of Getting Married reflects Angie's impetuous decision to escape matrimony with her boss for whom she represents a combination tax deduction and social hostess.

Percy Faith emphasizes restless, insistent percussion and wistful strings in his arrangement of I Just Can't Wait. (Charlie Smith, professional meal moocher, can't wait for the treat of seeing his girl friend fully dressed-her "system" is to wear a wrap-around bath towel in her hotel room and thus for long, rent-overdue periods stave off forcible eviction!)

Tom avoids the Christmas gift rush by standing still-as a street corner Santa Claus, collecting money for the Community Center. Percy Faith lends the spirited, joyous Be A Santa, a rousing orchestral treatment. Sleigh bells jingle gaily, church bells ring out merrily and piccolos tweet brightly in this captivating salude to the Yuletide.

Percy's famous trademark, silken strings, are used appropriately for How Can You Describe A Face?, Tom's eloquent attempt to describe Angie's beauty. Now I Have Someone is equally persuasive.

Comes Once In A Lifetime is a characteristically buoyant Jule Styne showstopper. Conductor Faith captures brilliantly its infectious exuberance. Wind instruments followed by rhapsodic strings translate into purely orchestral terms Angie's declaration of love, I Said It And I'm Glad.

Percy Faith concludes his musical tour of the Subways system by answering the happy question, What Is This Feeling In The Air? with a hint of wedding bells.

  20. Ebb Tide
Love Is Music

'Love Is Music' - and so it is! The two are inextricably entwined... can't do without each other. Well nigh all songs on the lighter side of the musical spectrum revolve around the subject of love. Which is not at all surprising really considering that love is the very fountain of life. Anyone who has delved into the history of the lovesong will know that, until well into the 'Fifties, it dealt with love in a distinctly platonic context. And that accounts for the fact that, in the English-language repertoire, such a word as 'moon' was invariably rhymed with 'June' or 'soon'; while, in the French chanson, 'L'Amour' was never very far removed from 'toujours'. Indeed, generally speaking it can be said that the romantic song was primarily made up of musical notes expressed in melodious idiom and addressed to such traditional themes as love gained, love lost and (temporary) loneliness. For decor there was usually the gleaming sun, the pouring rain or the gentle moonlight. Then, shortly after the arrival of rock 'n' roll in the 'Fifties, both performers and a younger generation of composers and lyricists began to give love an increasingly erotic interpretation. the age of 'Moonlight & Roses', it seemed, had come to an end.

Since then, however, time has taught us that the purely romantic ballad did not sink into oblivion. Even representatives of the pop-music fraternity were not averse to composing tuneful love-songs, some of which have already joined the select club of 'evergreens'. Take, for instance, 'Yesterday' and 'Michelle' by John Lennon and Paul McCartney; and 'Annie's Song' by John Denver. On this selection these three numbers are to be found in the good company of 17 other love-songs, all of them performed by The Broadway Stage Orchestra under their conductor Mark Robberts.

'Love Is Music' - and whoever listens to the treasure-chest of songs presented here would not argue with that. Melodies from the 'Fifties rub shoulders with romantic numbers written a decade or so later, so that the whole collection is a store of riches varying from jazz-pianist Errol Garner's 'Misty' to slows positively seeped in atmosphere such as Morris Albert's 'Feelings', Francis Lai's 'A Man And A Woman' and 'Love Story', and Johnny Pearson's 'Sleepy Shores'.

The numbers by these composers, who largely became known through their wealth of background and film-music, are found here alongside love-songs with which great stars from the top-world made such an impact. We've already mentioned John Lennon, Paul McCartney and John Denver. But here you'll also find Lionel Richie ('Endless Love'), Neil Diamond ('September Morn') and Elton John ('Blue Eyes'). And not to forget... one very, very special song: 'My Way'. Although French by origin, it was to conquer the world, thanks to Frank Sinatra in whose repertoire it has now remained for more than twenty years.

The very name "Melachrino" carries a musical ring; "Music By Melachrino" has rung throughout Britain (where the BBC Network broadcasts a radio show by that name) and the United States for a number of years.

A native of Britain, George Melachrino has spent his life surrounded by melody. When George was four years old, his step-father - a theatre orchestra conductor - taught him to play on a miniature violin. Later, he entered Trinity College Of Music where he concentrated on the study of string instruments and chamber works. Having mastered the violin, viola and cello, Melachirno directed his talents toward the wind instruments - the oboe, clarinet and saxophone, and eventually became proficient on every orchestral instrument except the harp and piano.

At the age of eighteen, he sang solos from the Savoy Hill Studios in England, having added singing to his range of accomplishments.

In 1939, George appeared with his own dance band at the Cafe De Paris in London, also broadcasting regularly for the BBC Radio Network. After several months, the gathering war clouds prompted Melachirno to lay down his baton and volunteer for duty. Assigned to the War Office, he was responsible for recording musical programs for broadcasting to British troops overseas. Promoted to musical director of the British Band of the A.E.F., George Melachrino and his musical military aggregation gained a distinguished reputation among troops and civilians alike, looking for relief from the stress and strain of wartime. Music in the Melachrino manner provided the perfect means of relaxation and respite from the noises of war.

At the close of the war, Melachrino gathered his finest military musicians around him, and launched upon a post-war musical career which has seen his name elevated to the top ranks of melodic fame. In addition to his other achievements, Melachrino is a gifted composer and arranger, working in such media as movies, radio, theatre, the ballroom, and television. In the United States, he has become particularly well-known since the war of his recordings of music in the mood tradition.

To millions of people, the magic name of Melachrino has become synonymous with beautiful music - the proof is in the listening!

A Song For You

The stentorian dramatic tenor of Mario del Monaco was heard throughout the world during the 1950s and 1960s. While often berated by critics for his unsubtle vocal production, del Monaco was a favorite of audiences who appreciated his power and sincerity of approach while tackling the heaviest roles in the Italian tenor repertory. A contract with Decca (London in the United States) produced a long series of recordings, many of them in partnership with Renata Tebaldi, and most of which have been reissued in CD format.

After having studied the early recordings of many tenors, del Monaco studied for a short time at the Pesaro Conservatory before gaining entry in 1935 to the school attached to the Rome Opera, largely through the urging of conductor Tullio Serafin. His formal debut occurred in 1941 at the Teatro Puccini as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly -- while on leave from the army. Engagements were quickly forthcoming once WW II ended. A successful Radames (Aïda) at Verona was followed by appearances at Covent Garden with the Neapolitan Opera (Canio, Cavaradossi, and Pinkerton). Central and South America offered performances in Mexico City, at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and in Rio de Janeiro.

His North American debut took place at the San Francisco Opera as Radames in 1950. He was thereupon engaged by Rudolf Bing for a November 1950 appearance at the Metropolitan as des Grieux in Manon Lescaut. Subsequently, he sang more than 100 performances at the Met over the course of seven seasons, appearing also at Chicago's Lyric Opera during the 1950s. In that time, del Monaco became the world's leading Otello, performing the role (according to his own tally) 427 times. Other roles which formed the core of his repertory included Enzo in Ponchielli's La Gioconda, the title role in Giordano's Andrea Chénier (next to Otello perhaps his most authoritative role), Don Alvaro in La forza del destino, Don José and Saint-Saëns' Samson (despite his less-than-fluent French), Verdi's Ernani, Dick Johnson in Puccini's La fanciulla del West and Pollione in Bellini's Norma. In Italy, he occasionally ventured into the Wagnerian repertory, although these performances were sung in Italian. He did, however, record Siegmund's "Winterstürme" from Die Walküre in German. It was not regarded as a success.

From the 1960s to his retirement from the stage in 1973, del Monaco increasingly confined his appearances to Italy, although he continued to record for Decca. His Loris in Giordano's Fedora (with Magda Olivero as the heroine) was taped when the singer was in his mid-fifties, by which time his voice had lost what little pliancy it had possessed earlier.

Among del Monaco's most prominent recordings are his two as Otello, each with the same principals (Tebaldi as Desdemona and Aldo Protti as Iago), but the second with Herbert von Karajan as conductor. His Andrea Chénier was preserved by Decca with Tebaldi as Maddalena and Ettore Bastianini as Gérard as well as in a live recording from Tokyo with Tebaldi and Protti.

The un-orthodox method of vocal production favored by del Monaco allowed him an overwhelming measure of strength in his middle and upper-middle registers, but lent a metallic buzz to his timbre and precluded his singing softly. Still, critics, following his death, rued his passing as they recalled performances of unsurpassed excitement.

Whenever a list of the world's most popular musicians is compiled, it is almost certain to include the names of FERRANTE and TEICHER. For, in the past decade, this great duo piano team has had one disc success after another and it is indeed a rare week in which at least one of their albums is not well up on the best-selling charts. More recently, Ferrante and Teicher have expanded their scope of action to encompass concert appearances from coast to coast, and the rousing ovations they receive from packed houses are a dramatic testimony to both their popularity and their performance.

There are, of course, many reasons for this well-earned and well-deserved success of Ferrante and Teicher, not the least of which is their impeccable musicianship, so very brilliantly showcased in the lush, string filled orchestrations which have become their trademark.

"THE ENCHANTED WORLD OF FERRANTE AND TEICHER" is the definitive exposition of this self-same trade mark. Here are even dozen superlative performances in the grand style that has made their fame and fortune. Share "THE ENCHANTED WORLD OF FERRANTE AND TEICHER" for it is a delightful world chock-full of the wonderful music that has made this talented team a household word throughout the globe.

Henry's Trumpets

Andre Kostelanetz and His Orchestra - Scarborough Fair And Other Great Movie Hits

  1. The Look Of Love (From "Casino Royale")
  2. Talk To the Animals (From "Doctor Dolittle")
  3. Laura
  4. Love Is Blue (L'Amour Est Bleu)
  5. I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You)
  6. The Bare Necessities (From "The Jungle Book")
  7. Scarborough Fair / Canticle (From "The Graduate")
  8. That Old Black Magic
  9. Stella By Starlight
  10. I'm In The Mood For Love
  11. Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing
Scarborough Fair

Asíde from the usual enormous pleasure you get from an Andre Kostelanetz album, there are some fun and games built in here, along with the sheer beauty of sweeping strings and rich orchestration.

For instance, before you read any further, see if you can name the movies that each of the songs were in. All right - how did you do? Eight out of eleven is very good and eleven out of eleven is nearly impossible because, just to make it difficult, one of them is not from a movie. At least not yet-but more about that later.

What makes for this puzzlement is the fact that many songs become standards so Iasting that you tend to forget the movies they were once a part of. Two prime examples: I'm In The Mood For Love, from "Every Night at Eight." and That Old Black Magic, the biggest tune from the Bing Crosby-Bob Hope extravaganza called "Star Spangled Rhythm."

Some of the songs will be easy to connect with a movie. They were included not to puzzle you but merely because they are great current hits: The Look of Love from "Casino RoyaIe," Talk to the Animals from "Doctor Dolittle" and The Bare Necessities from "The Jungle Book." The Iatter two are nominees for a 1967 Academy Award at this writing. And there's Scarborough Fair. from the hit motion picture “The Graduate."

The others may prove a little tougher if you are somewhat rusty on your cinema history. Laura is relatively easy as is Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing-if you remember their title is that of the movie. Who can forget Gene Tierney in the former and Jennifer Jones and William Holden in the latter.

Now things get a bit tougher. I'll Get By is from the Spencer Tracy-Irene Dunne picture "A Guy Named Joe." A rather touching morale-builder made during World War II. This one may have fooled you: Stella by Starlight is from "The Uninvited," starring Ray Mílland and Ruth Hussey. Remember?

The one song here that is not from a movie is the phenomenally popular Love ls Blue. It was one of the finalists (representing Luxembourg) in the Eurovision Contest, a TV song festival broadcast all over Europe in 1967. The main reason it is included is because it is one of the greatest songs in years-and if some Hollywood producer is smart. He will buy the title and song and build a movie around it. It is that powerful!

Throughout the album you have the big, dazzling, luminescent sound you have come to expect from Kostelanetz. By the way, his movie “sound stage" is at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York, famed throughout the world for its acoustical brilliance. You can hear it now.

It's The Talk Of The Town

Ray Conniff brought his chorus into the foreground for the first time on It's the Talk of the Town, and credited the album to the Ray Conniff Singers. Conniff's chorus is bright and cheery, unlike the immense-sounding Norman Luboff Choir or the comparatively stodgy Robert Shaw Chorale. But despite the high level of energy and enthusiasm, the choral format gives the album a throwback feel that is only amplified by material like "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" and the Gene Autry favorite "Buttons and Bows," although the latter is, admittedly, very good. The increased focus on the chorus comes at the expense of the instrumental arrangements, which are relegated to a supporting role well behind the voices. It's the Talk of the Town, more than any of Conniff's other vocal albums, treads a little too close to Mitch Miller territory for comfort.
