The recording of FOREVER MY LOVE, released in America as MOON OVER MIAMI, took place in April 1975 in Hamburg with soloists Ack van Rooyen (flugelhorn and trumpet), Herb Geller (flute) and Jiggs Whigham (trombone).

Five of the original works on this album were written by Bert Kaempfert together with his musical partner Herbert Rehbein: the snappy Reggae Romp, where the trumpets and trombones toss the melody back and forth and the flutes occasionally shimmer through, is reminiscent of Kaempfert's famous "Afrikaan Sound"; Cry Baby Cry, thickly scored and restful, Forever My Love, a romantic number which lent its title to the album; Walkin' And Shoutin' which looks to rhythm and blues as regard both form and melody; and Soft Shoulders, a number with a real bossa nova feeling to it which manages admirably without a true melody. The colorful interplay of the trombones and trumpets lends the number charm and it finally dies away with flurrying strings. I Love You So was written by Herbert Rehbein as early as 1964 with the solo trombone in mind.

The remaining six titles are all true hits. Moon Over Miami, composed in 1935, attained great popularity through frequent radio play and in recordings by Connie Boswell, Eddy Duchin and later Vaughn Monroe and George Shearing. In 1941 it served as the title music for the film musical of the same name with such great stars as Betty Grable, Don Ameche and Robert Cummings. My Prayer from 1939 was composed by the violinist Georges Boulanger and is also known under its French title of Avant de mourir. The work was a hit for such contrasting performers as Glenn Miller and his singer Ray Eberle, The Ink Spots, and The Platters who shot to the very top of the hit parade with the song in 1956. The present recording reflects the original scoring of the work for violin. Herbert Rehbein, who enjoyed a classical violin training, impresses with his performance of the solo part in this recording. On The Sunny Side Of The Street was premièred in "The International Revue," a spectacular Broadway show from 1930, and was heard in many film musicals later. The cheerful melody has lost nothing of its popularity over the years and has taken its place among the evergreens. The electrifying, swinging Perdido is a composition which immediately brings Duke Ellington and his orchestra to mind. It was written in 1942 for Ellington by the Puerto Rican-born trombonist Juan Tizol and is today one of the best known jazz pieces. Pagan Love Song was first heard in 1929 in the early film musical "The Pagan" where it was performed by Ramon Novarro. Twenty-one years later it was heard again in the cinema, this time sung by Howard Keel in the musical of the same name. Bert Kaempfert lends the song a touch of the south seas through chromatic turns and sparkling glissandi on the harp which are enhanced by a Hawaiian guitar - heard here for the first and last time in Kaempfert recordings.

The Theme From "The Godfather, Part II" is the only "classic" to come from more recent times. The melody, a hit in its day, is the main theme from the second film of the Mafia trilogy "The Godfather." It was written by the Italian composer Nino Rota who received an Oscar for his music to this film.

Kaempfert fans will be pleased to find two numbers among the four bonus tracks which have long been in demand. Raining In My Heart and the title number, written by Charlie Chaplin, are taken from Bert Kaempfert's last LP SMILE which was produced in 1979. One Smile Away,  and original composition, is a studio recording from 1976 which has only been previously released on the live album BERT KAEMPFERT IN CONCERT. Blue Avenue is the sensational new discovery from the tape archive. It was also recorded in 1976 and has never been released before.

The Complete After Midnight Sessions

"After Midnight" is the witching hour of music - the time when the old songs bring back the old memories and the time when musicians relax, play the tunes they like and in general settle into what they like to call "a good groove".

Sometimes - if you're lucky - you can capture this mood on record. The actual time of day (or night) that the recording takes place doesn't matter much. If the atmosphere is right, the participants sympathetic to one another, and the choice of tunes felicitous, three in the afternoon can be "After Midnight" in mood.

It was like that for this album. Capitol's new Tower Studios set the scene and all the conditions were right. At every session the prevailing atmosphere was "After Midnight" all the way.

This album is Nat Cole's first with his small group in some time. Long before he was known as a singer. Nat was one of the best of all jazz pianists, winner of Esquire Awards in 1946 and 1947, and top man in the Metronome poll in 1947, '48, and '49. The "King" Cole Trio won numerous honors too in capturing the Down Beat poll from 1944 to 1947 and the Metronome poll from 1945 to '48.

The Trio is an historic group in the saga of jazz and popular music in America. It is common today to see trios of piano, bass and guitar working in hotels and night clubs all over the country. Did you ever stop to consider that the "King" Cole Trio set the pattern for these groups? Until its success, no agency would book, and almost no night club would hire, such a small combination. When Nat first went looking an agent he was told time and again the group was too small. "You've got an awkward combination there," they'd tell him, but Nat kept on. "I knew the didn't what they were talking about," he says, and history has proved him right.

The "King" Cole Trio's story has also been interwound with that of Capitol Records. They made their first Capitol discs in 1943, when the company was a healthy youngster. Their second disc, Straighten Up and Fly Right, was an instant and tremendous hit. Since that time Nat "King" Cole (born Nathaniel Coles in Montgomery, Ala., in 1919, son of a Baptist preacher) has become one of the top names in the entertainment business and one of the biggest selling recording artists of all time. One of the great jazz piano players when he began the trio, Nat has now become one of the great ballad singers of our day - known throughout the world. And he is still a great pianist: witness his work in this album.

Nat is accompanied here by his regular group - guitarist John Collins, a veteran of the Art Tatum and Dizzy Gillespie groups and also an Esquire New Star winner; bassist Charlie Harris, who played with Lionel Hampton before joining Nat; and drummer Lee (Leonidas) Young, brother of the great Lester, who has worked extensively in motion picture studio orchestras and is also a veteran of the Lionel Hampton band. On Caravan and Lonely One, Jack Costanzo sits in on bongos.

A guest soloist joining the group on each tune is an arrangement that adds a little extra spice to the album - just as visiting musicians might drop by at a club after midnight and play a tune with the group. This particular sequence of guests stars fits especially well with the voice and music of Nat Cole.

(Notes by Ralph J. Gleason, editor of "The Rhythm Section," San Francisco Chronicle; and Down Beat columnist)

Little needs to be added to Ralph Gleason's notes to the original release of this album, but it is this: while After Midnight was widely recognized as a true classic at the time of its release, the added perspective that only time makes possible has shown us what it really is - one of those rare, perfect things that all too infrequently come our way. An inspired idea to begin with, in execution it so fired the imaginations of all involved that they gladly gave it their best, and often more than that, with the result that the transcendent totality of its individual parts wound up exceeding their fondest expectations.

The choice of guest soloists could not have been happier, for each of the four was among the leading players of his instrument who, in addition, shared with Cole and his trio members a deep commitment to, and acknowledged excellence in the performance of that bracing, accessible form of jazz known as Swing. And as the recorded minutes of these one-time meetings reveal, the results were as special as they were spectacular. Listen, and you'll marvel at what you hear: totally, authentically honest and direct and always resourcefully imaginative music-making of the highest calibers - ungimmicked, uncontrived, unaltered by overdubbing, splicing or any other after-the-fact editing - exactly as each grouping of five musicians, united in common cause, created it in the studio on these memorable August and September nights of 1956.

Of the principals three, sadly, are no longer with us - Cole, Juan Tizol and Stuff Smith - and as this album so forcibly reminds us, music is much the poorer for the loss of their distinctive, richly satisfying artistry. All were true originals, you see. However, the magic they created when Capitol brought them together for these informal, inspired sessions lives on in the recordings they left us which have been collected here, along with five additional selections - What Is There To Say, You Can Depend On Me, I Was A Little Too Lonely, Two Loves Have I and Candy - recorded for, but not issued in the original LP release of this enduringly classic Nat Cole album. This along with the superior sound quality digital technology permits, makes the compact-disc release of The Complete "After Midnight" Sessions a special event indeed, one to be welcomed by jazz listeners as well as Cole fans who,nin light of his supple, wholly swinging and unerringly economical jazz piano mastery, might have their appreciation of his music deepened even further. This is music that knows neither time nor allegiance to any camp or school but which, rather, in the utter perfection of its achievement, establishes its own incomparable standards.

  14. My Blue Heaven
  15. The Entertainer
  16. Ho Ho Ha Ha (The Last Blast)

Six nostalgic hits from the Fifties and six new compositions with his own unique sound - such are the ingredients of Bert Kaempfert’s album YESTERDAY AND TODAY, recorded in November 1972 and released the following year. It was probably for this reason that MCA released this compilation in the USA under the title FABULOUS FIFTIES... AND NEW DELIGHTS.

Do you remember Blueberry Hill? It was a Top Ten hit for Glenn Miller and his singer Ray Eberle in the Forties; it was a million seller for Fats Domino and his honky-tonk piano in 1956, and Louis Armstrong - who had recorded the number in 1949 - also profited from its success. And here it is again - given a decisively modern touch by Bert Kaempfert. Elvis Presley's Love Me Tender was an overwhelming success: taken from the film of the same name (Presley's very first film), the melody goes back to a song from the American Civil War, "Aura Lee," written by George R. Poulton. Bert Kaempfert pays homage here to the "King of Rock 'n' Roll" with his entirely personal interpretation of this early rock ballad. The guitarist Duane Eddy had a special "trade mark" in the 1950s: a twangy guitar sound with which he introduced his rock numbers - one of these was his highly successful Rebel Rouser, performed here à la Kaempfert, which happily connects 1958 with 1972. Bert Kaempfert, of course, also has his very own "trade mark" - a remarkable versatility which allows him to take a rhythm and blues number such as Night Train (a hit for James Brown in 1962) and lend it a truly modern touch without losing anything of the original thrilling beat.

If your memory functions better in the world of pop rather than rock, then two timeless melodies which have been treated with the Bert Kaempfert Sound will offer special pleasure: Who's Sorry Now, a highly popular song in the vaudeville theatres of the 1920s, became one of Connie Francis's greatest hits in 1958 in a modern version, and Everybody Loves Somebody. The latter song brought Frank Sinatra only moderate success at the end of the Forties but sold millions in 1964 when sung by Dean Martin who used it as his theme melody in his television shows and made it a true classic.

But maybe you prefer works by the composing team Bert Kaempfert/Herbert Rehbein such as You Turned My World Around which Frank Sinatra included in his repertoire, or Children Of Peace whose basic lyrical mood is spiced with dynamic, powerful sections or again I Remember Loving You which is based on the Cancan from Jacques Offenbach's opera "Orpheus In The Underworld." No matter what your taste is, YESTERDAY AND TODAY, a collection of truly classic instrumental works, offers something for everyone.

Four attractive bonus tracks enhance this CD, all of which are taken from the US album GALLERY from 1974. Written by Anita Kerr and Rod McKuen, For Bert is an homage which was included in an album by the Anita Kerr Singers and dedicated to Bert Kaempfert. In turn, Kaempfert rendered his thanks for this honor with an instrumental version. Two classics constantly in demand are My Blue Heaven and The Entertainer. The latter number attained renewed popularity through the film "The Sting." Ho Ho Ha Ha is an original composition whose particular charm lies in the humorous arrangement for trombones.
