On Friendly Persuasion, Ray Conniff,
with the help of his orchestra and chorus, interprets a variety of
songs with brassy arrangements that at times include trombone solos
played by Conniff himself. Conniff
expeimented with new stereo setups on this album, and they are briefly
addressed in his sleeve notes. The chorus is wielded exclusively as an
instrument on this outing -- there are none of the Mitch Miller-style singalongs heard on many of Conniff's other albums. The title track and "April Love" are associated with Pat Boone, but from there the repertoire moves in unusual directions, from "High Noon" to the Original Dixieland Jazz Band's "Tiger Rag." Despite his undeserved reputation as a purveyor of Muzak, Ray Conniff's LPs covered a lot of ground and were not all aimed at the same market. Friendly Persuasion is for fans of orchestral pop and wide stereo recordings, and for those who prefer the trademark wordless vocals with which Conniff is identified.

The classics get their comeuppance and the pops rule the roost in this liverly pot-pourri of musical favorites, arranged and conducted by the renowned Werner Müller. the curtain raiser here, for instance, started life as "Andalucia", a mild-mannered piano piece by the Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona, but it would never have seen the light of the Hit Parade had not Al Stilman adapted it, arranged it, renamed it, and otherwise coaxed it into the standard we now know as THE BREEZE AND I. The Andalusian motif reigns supreme also in Augustin Lara's enormously popular GRANADA, a tonal tapestry inspired by the vivid city in the foothills of the towering Sierra Nevadas; and surely it would take all the rains in the plains to dampen the ardor of THE RITUAL FIRE DANCE, the breathless excerpt from Manuel de Falla's tempestuous opera "Love, the Sorcerer".
Meanwhile, back at EL RANCHO GRANDE, the Latin flavor is tempered by a dash of American orchestration, and for final fulfillment of the Hispanica promise, we have Tolchard Evans' fanciful fling with the fair LADY OF SPAIN. Also from the medium-hair side of the musical coin comes the enchanting song of VILIA from Franz Lehar's operetta-ful account of the life, and more particularly the loves of "The Merry Widow"; and the scampering HORA STACCATO, magnum opus of an otherwise unherolded Roumanian composer named Gregor Dinicu.
From the world of Tin Pan Alley, Maestro Müller has extracted T. D's BOOGIE WOOGIE, a rollicking reminder of the heyday of Tommy Dorsey and Company, and in milder mood, Will Hudson's gently evocative portrait of MOONGLOW. A bit further off the beaten Alley, we find Morgan Lewis' tender HOW HIGH THE MOON which appeared first in "Two for the Show", a Broadway venture of 1940 that proved much less durable than its hit song; nor must we overlook THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR THE SUNRISE, the sensation of 1919, and the product of a most unusual collaboration indeed: Ernest J. Seitz, a Canadian concert-pianist and symphony conductor, and a budding thespian named Eugene Lockhart, who was soon to drop the "Eu" and become one of America's most beloved actors.
Such is the musical menu Werner Müller has concocted - a savory platter of tunes light and listenable, spiced with lively harmonies, and served with a full measure of orchestral sparkle. Harken herewith to the "Wild Strings"!.

An Italian chamber orchestra, Rondó Veneziano
set itself apart from many groups of similar style by not only
employing mostly women musicians and making it a rule to perform in
period Baroque dress, but mainly because they were able to meld
traditional chamber music pieces to modern backing tracks, rhythms, and
percussion lines, almost giving their classical sound a club music
foundation that sometimes bordered on prog rock. Their first big break
came in the United Kingdom in 1983, with the single "La Serenissima,"
which was followed two years later by a successful appearance providing
the score to the film Not Quite Jerusalem. Their first album, a
self-titled affair, was released in 1980, and was followed by more than
70 albums over the next (nearly) 30 years. In 2005, the group released a
live collection entitled 25 Live.

Personnel:
Woody Herman, clarinet and alto sax;
Brian O'Flaherty, Scott Wagstaff, Mark Lewis, Steven Harrell, Bill Stapleton, trumpet and fluegelhorn;
Gene Smith, John Fedchock, Larry Shunk, trombone;
Paul McGinley, Bill Ross, Billy Powers, tenor sax and flute;
Mike Brignola, baritone sax;
John Oddo, electric & acoustic piano;
Mike Hall, electric & acoustic bass;
Dave Ratajczak, drums
This is a representative set of charts from the 1981 Woody Herman Herd. There are several old war-horses mixed in with some of the newer things of the period. the sound is first class and the band has a fine 'presence'.
The set opens with an inevitable Four Brothers to show off the current sax section, who perform in with commendable enthusiasm. Next a Bill Stapleton arrangement of the Harold Arlen standard Come Rain Or Come Shine performed here by Steven Harrell on fluegelhorn. This is followed by pianist John Oddo's original composition Theme In Search Of A Movie with solos by Oddo himself on piano, Harrell again on fluegelhorn and Woody's alto bringing up the rear.
Gene Smith's trombone is featured next, firstly on Ralph Burns' Bijou, whose original version featured Bill Harris; then on Michel Legrand's What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life, arranged here by Alan Broadbent. Woody sings the lyrics of the old Al Jolson standard Sonny Boy, Ralph Burns' arrangement also gives space for John Fedchock's trombone. In this version of Don Rader's Greasy Sack Blues, the arrangement is picked half way through with Oddo's piano followed by the bass of Mike Hall; the band then winds on to a screaming climax with the trumpet of Brian O'Flaherty prominent.
Woody then takes time out to reminisce about days gone by, and uses this as an introduction to Nat Pierce's arrangement of Avery Parrish's After Hours which was first heard on Woody's 1971 Fantasy album 'Brand New', and features Oddo's piano.
Most big bands have an arrangement of Billy Strayhorn's Take The A Train in their library. Woody is no exception, although I must confess to not having heard him play it before. This arrangement is presumably the work of John Oddo; it features Harrell on muted trumpet, and the tenor of Paul McGinley. As Time Goes By features Woody and Oddo, then leads into Mood Indigo with Woody again and Hall, in turn this developes into Woody's Blue Flame theme. Dusko Goykovich's composition Woody's Whistle is played as an encore and features Oddo, McGinley, Harrell and Hall.
Taken overall, an excellent set of music from the 1981 Herd on location, with Woody's spoken comments adding to the atmosphere of the occasion.

Arranged and Conducted by Nelson Riddle
In the days when recording artists did not write their own material, it
was not unusual for them to record more material than actually fit into
record companies' release schedules. As this album makes abundantly
clear, that was the case with Nat "King" Cole. Between December 20, 1955, and January 21, 1955, Cole held a series of recording sessions with arranger/conductor Nelson Riddle. Cole
was near the peak of his commercial appeal, but this was also a
transitional period in the record business, with rock & roll coming
in and claiming a big chunk of the pop singles charts. Though a Capitol
Records press release refers to this material as "an unissued studio
album," it's more likely that the recording dates were intended as
singles sessions rather than constituting an album project. Two singles
were extracted and released from the material, resulting in four chart
placings for "Night Lights," "Too Young to Go Steady," "To the Ends of
the Earth," and "Never Let Me Go." But at a time when Elvis Presley
was transforming the singles charts, the rest of these songs may have
been deemed old-fashioned. Several of the tracks ("Too Young to Go
Steady" among them) also came from a new stage musical, Strip for Action,
which closed out of town, possibly dooming the chances of the other
tracks being released. Nevertheless, these recordings contain excellent
performances of typically expressive Riddle charts. The wonder is that, in the 36 years since Cole's
death, Capitol has only bothered to release four of these tracks beyond
the four singles sides released at the time, leaving 12 unreleased Cole
masters of this quality. It's true that the performances are more
impressive than the actual compositions, but this album still
constitutes a welcome discovery among Cole reissues.

The Woody Herman Orchestra is in fine form during this live performance from the 1981 Concord Jazz Festival. Other than trumpeter Bill Stapleton,
none of the sidemen are all that well-known over a decade later but
they played very well as an ensemble and there are some worthwhile solos
on the varied material. Al Cohn guests on "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" and a spirited "Lemon Drop" while the great Stan Getz steals solo honors on "The Dolphin."
